Hebrews 4:12 “Fix your eyes on Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning it’s shame and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Joy and happiness, although very similar, are not the same thing. The definitions in the dictionary might lead one to think so but as Christians we know that happiness is based on mere circumstances and is a feeling. It is fleeting. The feeling of happiness does not last forever. Joy, however, is eternal. It comes from the Greek word chara. It is a virtue that we are privileged to possess as children of God. It is deeply rooted in our soul and is eternal. Nothing can rob us of our joy if we do not give it permission to. We can obtain it regardless the situation or circumstance. In the middle of darkness, you can have joy. In the midst of famine, you can have joy. Are you facing financial instability? No worries, you can have joy. Failed marriages, disobedient children, sickness, and natural disaster can occur but are you following me? You can still have JOY! In the midst of _________________ you can have JOY! (And you fill in the blank).
Why should we have joy in every circumstance and situation? The reason is because Christ loves us so much that He died for our sins. We have eternity waiting for us! Life here on earth is but a vapor. This isn’t all there is, we have an entire eternity just waiting to happen. And thank you God for that! Hebrews 4:12 tells us to “fix our eyes on Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning it’s shame and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” If the Lord could look upon death on the cross with joy, I am sure we can look at our current situations with joy as well. He found joy in enduring the cross; we should find joy in the things of this earth. May the Lord’s example of everlasting joy be our reason to be filled with joy.
