Since February is the month of the year when everyone is thinking about love, I thought I would share a fun little project our family is doing for the 2016 year to help us love well.
For the past several years, I have been jotting down out of the ordinary, random acts of kindness, extra sweet things my kids have done. At the end of each year, I write these little “acts” out on cute paper and present them to the kids with a dollar for every act. I know, I know, you are probably thinking I have given them each a thousand dollars since this was done over the coarse of a year, but I actually capped it with the top 20 best things each child did that particular year.
Well… This year, I decided to throw a little curve ball into the mix because the kids began to kind of expect the money or anticipated it coming at the end of the year, like, come December 1 they were already discussing what they were going to buy with their “end of the year” money.
So this year, I decided to give them each cash that they had to spend on another family member during a special date. We drew names and they are to plan a special date for that person, using their money. All 6 of us drew names and will be going on dates together throughout the 2016 year.
Emma Rose drew my name and was so adorable and pinned my name over her bunk in the camper because it made her so happy. ❤️ She actually took me on a date for a pedicure before our cruise last week. It was such a precious time of having her love me well during our date.
Our family word(s) for 2016 is “love well.” So along with the dates throughout the year, I presented the kids with a cute mason jar that is our love well jar for the year. It is on our counter in the camper and anytime we witness another family member loving well, we jot their name/what they did/and the date on a slip of card stock and we place it in the jar. We plan on doing this all year and will sit together as a family on New Years Eve 2016 and read over them.
The love well acts can be anything from having a servants heart, an act of kindness towards another, helping mommy or daddy around the camper without being asked, putting another family member first, an act of service in the community, a compliment that is given to another family member and the list goes on…
We want to be intentional about loving well. Intentional about loving the Lord, each other and the community around us. And as a traveling family, our community just might look a little different every single month. It isn’t always easy to love, but with this little tool as an extra reminder… In our house we will learn to love and love well! Besides, it’s part of the great commandment!
“In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us. By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.” (1 John 4:10-16)
